Goals
Below the school, two football fields,
Two pairs of goalposts, echoing the twin spires’
Proclamation: there are goals loftier than scholarship.
Our early target, Ulster’s MacRory Cup,
Then ‘Sail Armagh down the field,’ all the way
To Croke Park, the first Colleges Championship.
Jim Devlin at fullback, Iggy Jones up front:
His quicksilver runs rattle the goal net:
V-E and V-J Day seemed far less important.
Goalkeeper Caherty went A WOL from our billet,
Spent the night at a lurid Fairview carnival,
Where under the whirling lights he met a girl.
At breakfast grinning:the goalie scores a goal.
